AaronSw: """Robert Metcalfe, founder of 3Com and a friend of Kamen's who is familiar with the project, said those who are disappointed that the scooter doesn't live up to the hype might be jumping the gun. The scooter announced yesterday, he said in an e-mail, is not "It." "Dean Kamen still has a few more tricks up his sleeve," Metcalf wrote, "and you ain't seen nothing yet.""""
AaronSw: Meanwhile, Dean Kamen sends a personal letter to Ginger fans, saying "I realize that nothing, not even Segway HT, can live up to someone's imagination."
AaronSw: While we were playing the "What is IT?" game, my brother suggested a cardboard box: it can do anything if you have a good imagination. He'll be selling them for $19.95 starting today. ;-)
AaronSw: In a lot of these Segway articles, Paul Saffo, Director of the Institute For the Future is quoted. Which made me wonder: What does the IftF do besides get quoted? The answer appears to be not much.
AaronSw: Well, at long last ATTBI has turned the lights back on. It took a while for me to figure out how to reconfigure (they were running some nasty intercepting proxies), but at least I'm back online.
AaronSw: On a more serious note, I think the major benefit of the Segway is that it really might give us a chance to take back our cities. Between the car and some misguided suburban planning the modern American city hasn't been faring so well. But the Segway, by lengthening the distance people are willing to walk/segway, might make New Urbanism a reality.
