- <sbp> "The Web is universal and so should be able to encompass everything across the range from the very rough scribbled idea on the back of a virtual envelope to a beautifully polished work of art." - http://www.w3.org/DesignIssues/Editor
- 01:21:51 [sbp]
- <sbp> I'd love a decent HyperText editor, but they simply don't come up to my pedantic standards. I should write my own, but I'd only get an outline :-)
- 01:24:19 [sbp]
- I'd like an HTE to be able to save directly over the Web, having a preprogrammed HTTP => FTP redirect. It should just accept that fact that PUT it poorly implemented, and move on
- 01:25:03 [sbp]
- It should not put cruddy DOCTYPE junk at the top of the file if I don't want to, or modify the source when I change it, even in a way which it doesn't like
- 01:25:36 [sbp]
- editors are not browsers. It'd be good if they could recognize other popular browsers, so that I could simply click a link onto one of *their* pages
- 01:26:43 [sbp]
- er... so that if I have http://www.w3.org/ up in IE6, and I want to create a link to it in a document that I'm editing on my HTE, the HTE should put me in some mode where it actually lets me get the address from that page just by moving to the app. or something. Might be impossible, or difficult, to program, but hey, this is my app we're talking about
- 01:27:16 [sbp]
- It should still obviously be able to browse, supporting crap-HTML through Tidy, XHTML, and CSS styled XML. Oh, and XSLT
- 01:28:04 [sbp]
- the page interface doesn't have to be perfect, but it has to be solid. I want to feel like I'm using a stable app. Amaya feels as if it's been put together with ten year old chewing gum - and the refresh rate is terrible
- 01:29:26 [sbp]
- everything should be intuitive. The fact that there is a logical structure to the document needs to be exposed, but it should be natural

- [Global Notice] Hi all. This is a semi-automated reminder. We are approaching our next release upgrade, to 1.0.31, a bug fix release. Please take some time today and through the weekend to use the test bed extensively. It's on irc.openprojects.net, port 9001. Use the channels, have conversations, do everything you do here only more so. It'll help ensure a smooth upgrade. bugs@openprojects.net for problems. This message will repeat. Thanks!

We've upgraded to the version on test bed rather hurriedly to resolve the problem. The two main outstanding problems are (1) a hubbing problem which results in your getting "*** IDLE Unknown command" fairly frequently and (2) broken DNS. We have fixed problem number (2) on the test bed.

- [Global Notice] Hi all. As part of our recovery from yesterday's DoS, we'll be moving some servers to test modified hub code. More about that in a moment, on WALLOPS; for information, change your client mode to +w. Thanks.
- 21:48:24 [lilo]
- [Global Notice] There will be a split or two as detailed on wallops, in just a moment. They'll be fairly large splits.

- [Global Notice] Hi all. Global notices with status will follow. Due to our skript kiddie incursion early this morning, we will need to perform a final upgrade on the servers to clean up the remaining problems. Details follow.
- 22:30:04 [lilo]
- [Global Notice] Early this morning OPN time (UTC), a kiddie discovered an exploit allowing him to crash nearly all of our production servers. This exploit had already been plugged in our testbed release, which was not quite ready to go. But the decision was made to go to that release to resolve the critical problem. We've spent the day resolving outstanding problems, and we believe the resulting 1.0.31 release should a good one.
- 22:31:20 [lilo]
- [Global Notice] Obviously, we've finished up this upgrade in a bit of a hurry. Since we're concerned about stability issues, we need to do the upgrade fairly quickly, so that our lead coder will be present to handle any problems.
- 22:32:33 [lilo]
- [Global Notice] We're finishing our config changes and source push, and in about 15-25 minutes we'll start upgrading. The upgrade will be done in 5 groups. Some of those groups will have high-load servers, so the disconnects and reconnects for the users and the split/join traffic will be pretty heavy.
- 22:33:24 [lilo]
- [Global Notice] We apologize for the rushed nature of the upgrade, but it's essential we be able to deal with any problems that may occur. We'll keep you posted and will let you know before the first upgrade occurs. Thanks.

- [Global Notice] Okay folks. First upgrades will be in just a bit. We're starting with AU servers, group one, and users on those servers will be notified.

- 23:31:14 [lilo]
- [Global Notice] Okay folks, time for three servers and a hub, EU1....
- 23:37:17 [lilo]
- [Global Notice] In a moment, EU2 will be upgraded, remaining servers and another hub. We'll notify the individual users who will be dumped, they should just reconnect. Thanks.
- 23:43:28 [lilo]
- [Global Notice] Okay all. This is where it gets messy. One of our hub sponsors is doing maintenance on the network at the same time we are doing this. So there will be a bit of instability, and US1 and US2 upgrades will be one long noisy event. Please bear with us and reconnect manually if you get knocked off. Thanks.
