00:08:59 [davb]
hi
00:09:09 [davb]
its too hot to be alive though...
00:26:34 [davb]
talli?
00:28:06 [rbm]
Inquizitophylax: around?
00:29:15 [rbm]
Inquizitophylax: do you have the warranty certificate for this CPU? I think it fried.
00:29:26 [davb]
:(
00:29:30 [rbm]
;-(
00:29:56 [davb]
did it come with its own fan? I got a boxed Duron this weekend.
00:30:10 [rbm]
It came with the fan Inquizitophylax sent me :)
00:31:21 [rbm]
davb: Hmmm, re: the tcl files I don't think so. The dbname is openacs.org-dev IIRC
00:31:42 [davb]
ok. if you have a chance later, maybe we can test the user-migration script.
00:32:34 [Inquizitophylax]
paje, seen rbm
00:33:01 [Inquizitophylax]
rbm, you fried it?!
00:33:15 [rbm]
Inquizitophylax: _I_ didn't fry it. It fried itself.
00:33:23 [Inquizitophylax]
How can it frie itself
00:33:26 [rbm]
The temperature never went very high.
00:33:38 [Inquizitophylax]
Oh
00:33:41 [rbm]
Inquizitophylax: The same way many many Athlons go bad.
00:33:44 [Inquizitophylax]
I probably know what happened
00:34:01 [Inquizitophylax]
If you put so much thermal goo on it...it dripped over the L1 bridges probably
00:34:05 [rbm]
My retailer friend said a good percentage of athlons go bad.
00:34:17 [davb]
this beer is not cold enough...
00:34:26 [rbm]
Inquizitophylax: That wasn't the problem.
00:34:47 [Inquizitophylax]
Well, it failed :)
00:35:03 [rbm]
So my question for you is, can I call AMD about it?
00:35:32 [Inquizitophylax]
no
00:35:36 [rbm]
Eeek
00:36:51 [Inquizitophylax]
The serial number is in my name
00:37:33 [davb]
rbm: i added a directory under www bboard-migr it has the migration scripts and stuff. the docs are in index.html
00:38:03 [rbm]
Inquizitophylax: so can you call it or not?
00:38:18 [Inquizitophylax]
You can call
00:38:21 [Inquizitophylax]
you can pretend to be me
00:38:49 [Inquizitophylax]
but when everything is settled you would have to ship it under my name with my return address and then I would have to re-ship it to you
00:39:12 [Inquizitophylax]
Alternatively...You can ask your retailer friend to RMA it as a new sale
00:39:37 [Inquizitophylax]
but then you can get into a mess of them checking serial numbers in some database...yada yada yada
00:39:40 [Inquizitophylax]
All that good stuff
00:39:57 [Inquizitophylax]
I did find a video card though but it's PCI
00:39:57 [rbm]
hmmm, okay. I'll give them a call then.
00:40:07 [Inquizitophylax]
What info do you need
00:40:20 [rbm]
I have your name and address. Don't think I need anything else.
00:40:28 [Inquizitophylax]
Serial number of the processor?
00:40:35 [rbm]
Oh yeah, that :)
00:41:31 [Inquizitophylax]
i don't get how it failed for you
00:41:37 [rbm]
I don't either.
00:41:45 [Inquizitophylax]
btw...According to them it was a one time replacement so I don't know how far you can get
00:41:46 [rbm]
But as he said, many Athlons "just fail" (tm)
00:41:55 [Inquizitophylax]
You also need the old RMA
00:42:31 [rbm]
Well, I'll give it a try. If it doesn't work, I'll try to get my boss to buy me a CPU.
00:42:48 [Inquizitophylax]
Just don't get me in trouble with AMD
00:42:52 [rbm]
brb. gotta reboot.
00:43:10 [rbm]
Inquizitophylax: If there's a chance I can get you in trouble, I won't even try. I don't want to cause you any trouble.
00:44:38 [Inquizitophylax]
well, they can look up the serial number in the database and whatnot
00:45:13 [Inquizitophylax]
I can just send you a Duron 950
00:46:36 [Inquizitophylax]
anyway
00:46:46 [Inquizitophylax]
I'm going home because I'm starving and I don't really want to be at work anymore

14:52:36 [talli]
denshi: is there any chance that you might start building webdav into AOLserver before you get paid for it?
14:52:43 [talli]
as an academic pursuit, perhaps?
14:52:49 [denshi]
uhh... yes
14:53:01 [denshi]
but it won't be production-ready in anyway shape or form
14:53:12 [talli]
actually, i will ping the guy who is supposedly building a form of webdav
14:53:18 [denshi]
and I can't start academic pursuits until I find some new work
14:53:47 [talli]
cool
14:55:08 [talli]
denshi: do you check dice.com?
14:55:36 [denshi]
dice has been of middling help to me over the years
14:57:44 [denshi]
do you have a preferred schedule for webDAV?

hiya folks
15:53:28 [PascalS]
is anyone with root permissions on openacs.org here now?
15:54:57 [rbm]
hey pascal!
15:55:05 [rbm]
I have, what's up?
15:55:54 [PascalS]
I just posted something to the bboard, and I check on openacs.org and it's vulnerable.
15:56:13 [rbm]
uh oh
15:56:19 [rbm]
vulnerable to what?
15:56:22 [PascalS]
You need to change the ownership of the files in /usr/local/aolserver/bin to root asap.
15:56:22 [Inquizitophylax]
uh oh :)
15:56:34 [rbm]
why root?
15:56:50 [Inquizitophylax]
got root?

15:57:18 [rbm]

15:58:10 [PascalS]
Sorry, I should have first alerted you.
15:59:18 [rbm]
hmmmm, that makes sense
15:59:23 [PascalS]
and while you are at it, the server config.tcl should be readable/writable only by root.
15:59:56 [Inquizitophylax]
so your real name is PAscal?
16:00:14 [PascalS]
uh, yea.
16:00:28 [PascalS]
Inquizitophylax, not everyone needs a nickname.
16:00:40 [rbm]

rbm: Shall I resend that last message there?
16:26:48 [rbm]
talilee: But there are unnofficial packages
16:26:54 [rbm]
PascalS: no, that's fine

anything happening this afternoon?
19:09:02 [rbm]
you missed the action
19:13:26 [davb]
heh
19:14:53 [davb]
i am working on a patch to the search triggers to not index certain items. A searchable_p field is added to cr_revisions. Which if you so choose, you may populate with the value FALSE to signify not to index an item.
19:16:36 [davb]
I also added to the actual search service contract another attribute, searchable_p that is it is set to false will tell the indexing code to skip that item. But I really think it is better to handle it in the triggers and not insert an item into the queue based on your application.
19:19:10 [davb]
i suspect I will submit a patch.
19:19:31 [davb]
here is a question will
19:20:01 [davb]
if searchable_p <> FALSE return TRUE if searchable_p = NULL?
19:21:27 [davb]
apparently not.
19:21:32 [davb]
darn.
19:21:46 [davb]
i will have to check for = TRUE or = NULL
19:21:54 [cro]
In Oracle wouldn't you have to say "NVL(searchable_p, false, false)" or some such?
19:22:02 [cro]
Is Pg the same way?
19:22:14 [davb]
coalesce is pg, but basically yet.
19:22:28 [davb]
but can i do that in an IF statement in pl/[pg]sql?
19:22:31 [cro]
yeah--I forgot--I think Oracle has coalesce now too
19:22:33 [davb]
i guess i'll try it :)
19:22:36 [davb]
cool.
19:24:06 [davb]
hmmm. i want TRUE if searchable P is true or NULL
19:24:19 [davb]
so that if you decide not to set it, you items will be indexed.
19:25:48 [davb]
aha.
19:25:54 [davb]
it works, but reverse of yours.
19:26:05 [davb]
coalesce(searchable_p, TRUE)
19:26:15 [davb]
that makes my if much prettier
19:26:19 [cro]
Off the top of my head--I probably got it backwards.
19:28:52 [davb]
i can't wait until openacs drops support for pg 7.1. Create or replace is a beautiful thing :)

That would be me
19:46:38 [PascalS]
duh.
19:48:32 [talilee]
cro == CR Oldham
19:48:52 [PascalS]
So, talli, are all your servers vulnerable?
19:48:56 [PascalS]
or were?
19:49:18 [talilee]
no, we don't develop with 3.2.5 anymore
19:49:29 [PascalS]
It's not a 3.2.5 issue.
19:49:30 [talilee]
and we host with hub.org
19:49:35 [talilee]
but i will tell my guys about it
19:50:05 [cro]
yeah but I thought the flaw was in AOLserver itself, so even 4.5 could introduce a hole, right?
19:50:06 [PascalS]
It's the server install thingy where you only need one webserver defacement to actually get root.
19:50:22 [PascalS]
no, it's a flaw in the install guide.
19:50:33 [cro]
right, I understand.
19:50:43 [cro]
Pascal, you run Debian?
19:50:43 [PascalS]
it's a problem with any program that root must run.
19:50:52 [PascalS]
no. rh7
19:50:59 [PascalS]
unfortunately
19:51:02 [talilee]
i'm telling Luke about it
19:51:20 [PascalS]
I started redhat, waaaaaaay back. Sort of hard to switch
19:51:31 [cro]
Same with me, other way around.
19:52:00 [PascalS]
I installed it once, but I have a hard enough time figuring out all the redhat tools.
19:52:08 [cro]
no kidding.
19:52:10 [PascalS]
I don't want to learn a whole new set
19:52:15 [cro]
And it's becoming so graphical now...
19:52:45 [PascalS]
Yes, and it's very hard to find some graphical interfaces you have at install time, but not when in use
19:53:00 [talilee]
if you don't like graphical installs, try gentoo!
19:53:09 [talilee]
the install is as byzantine as you can get
19:53:15 [talilee]
but the docs are excellent
19:53:19 [PascalS]
like diskdruid, fer example
19:53:24 [cro]
And for us old time Unixheads, you never know anymore if you edit a config file if you are going to break a graphical tool somewhere.
19:53:59 [PascalS]
Most are pretty okay.
19:54:16 [PascalS]
The only thing you mustn't do is re order files.
19:54:29 [PascalS]
and use non standard syntax
19:54:34 [PascalS]
like dropping quotes
19:55:14 [PascalS]
So, talli, what brings you here twice?
19:55:45 [talilee]

19:55:47 [talilee]

20:30:47 [rbm]
talilee: Thanks for bug-tracker. It rocks!
20:31:55 [talilee]
rbm: just issues with connectivity and setup
20:32:07 [talilee]
they are still ironing out this hosting stuff, form what i can gather
20:32:07 [rbm]
do you have oacs 4 running there?
20:32:10 [talilee]
yes
20:32:27 [rbm]
Cool! I'll need some tips from you. I'll be putting an oacs 4 instance there in a week or two
20:38:38 [cro]
talli: I recall some discussion from you here that said the VM setup was doing wierd things under load--did they fix that?
20:40:04 [rbm]
cro: I sent an e-mail to them asking about htat
20:40:07 [rbm]
that even
20:40:30 [cro]
anyone know how many physical machines they have?
20:40:43 [rbm]
I asked them that too :)
20:43:17 [Inquizitophylax]
* Inquizitophylax goes home
20:47:53 [talilee]
cro: i think so
20:48:14 [talilee]
rbm: no prob about bugtracker. but i would love if you repayed us by extending the package!
20:48:33 [talilee]
it could be a really great part of a project management tool
20:48:37 [rbm]
talilee: what extensions are you looking for?
20:48:56 [talilee]
well, we should start a dialogue on the boards about how to add things
20:49:02 [talilee]
for one, it needs a better search interface
20:49:09 [talilee]
lars should post his ideas about how to implement that
20:49:21 [talilee]
also, if we could integrate it somehow with CVS it would be really nice
20:49:50 [talilee]
perhaps best, though, is add a service contract for it so it could be used with new-portal
20:50:05 [talilee]
that could be immediately implemented in the new oacs.org
20:50:48 [rbm]
that'd be great
20:50:57 [talilee]
yeah
20:51:19 [talilee]
then you could have a nice interface for project management between a bboard portlet, a butracker portlet and a file manager portlet
20:52:18 [talilee]
can the new ecommerce package be implemented within subsites?
20:52:30 [talilee]
meaning each subsite can have it's own ecommerce package
20:55:52 [talilee]
rbm: still there?
20:56:36 [talilee]
i really don't know what people are talking about when they say *nix desktops have bad usability
20:56:41 [rbm]
yeah
20:56:46 [talilee]
i find them more useful than windows
20:56:50 [rbm]
Yeah!
20:57:04 [rbm]
talilee: I think it can, I haven't tried though
20:57:10 [talilee]
ok, cool
21:00:36 [talilee]
all right, gotta head out. talk to you guys later... as that fool talli

titled item D
22:04:04 [davb]
excellent.
22:04:13 [davb]
that will spice up the google referrers
22:16:27 [rbm]
Inquizitophylax: hey, you here?

23:06:29 [denshi]
oooh... Sims
23:25:35 [davb]
I am going to post my referrers one of these days so you guys can see what kind of people are searching google and finding the irc weblog for this channel.
23:26:51 [denshi]
sounds fun
23:27:04 [denshi]
do that today!
23:27:15 [rbm]
I occasionally look at my referrers. It's interesting.
23:27:55 [denshi]
my hits tripled today after lwn.net mentioned mod_scheme
23:28:31 [rbm]
* rbm cheers denshi enthusiastically
23:28:54 [rbm]
Now you have l33t sk1lls!
23:29:11 [rbm]
you can spend years writing apache2 mods!
23:30:07 [denshi]
uhh.. 2 weeks
23:30:16 [denshi]
of course, the ns_scheme took about 3 hours...
23:30:27 [denshi]
but then I'd already made all my mistakes on the first try
23:30:30 [davb]
cool. is it available?
23:31:03 [rbm]
denshi: I meant from now on, on a job or something, hence the l33t sk1lls
23:31:14 [davb]
actually the referers aren't that bad, but I suspect that last item will change that.
23:31:36 [denshi]
what last item? Sims: Hardcore?
23:31:41 [davb]
yes
23:31:49 [davb]
:)
23:31:53 [rbm]
It's weird developing for AOLserver 2.x with straight ns_db calls :)

23:33:36 [davb]
rbm, can we try to migrate the users?
23:36:08 [davb]
anyone want to listen to my plan for restricting what items get indexed?
23:36:18 [rbm]
davb: Not now, I'm crunching to finish this report for work
23:36:36 [davb]
ah. ok, proceed :)
23:36:44 [rbm]
sorry
23:36:50 [davb]

23:37:02 [rbm]
I've been at work 11 hours already
23:37:03 [davb]
work is a little more important
23:37:21 [rbm]
I have to write a perl script :(
23:37:25 [davb]
ack, finish up and go home! stop talking to us.
23:37:39 [rbm]
Talking here keeps my sanity, since I'm dealing with Perl
23:37:51 [rbm]
Perl is freaking nasty
23:38:19 [rbm]
and I forgot my camel book at home
23:38:24 [rbm]
I should go pick it up
23:38:29 [rbm]
* rbm does so
23:39:27 [rbm]
on second thought, I just need to find out how to open a file and read from it from perl. I should be able to find that online
23:42:47 [davb]
hey!
23:42:50 [davb]
i am annoyed.
23:43:01 [rbm]
hacker! Leave those lists alone!
23:47:29 [rbm]
How do you get command-line arguments in Perl?>
23:50:00 [davb]
@ARGV
23:50:16 [davb]
its an array of the command line arguments
23:50:23 [davb]
I have PERL in a nutshell :)
23:50:27 [rbm]
I remember that's an array.
23:50:52 [rbm]
Now how do you reference the elements and is the first argument 0 or 1?
23:51:05 [rbm]
Probably 1 since it most likely follows C's convention
23:51:38 [rbm]
ok, I know how to reference it.
23:53:46 [markd2]
markd2 has quit (Read error: 113 (No route to host))
