00:17:21 [denshi]
denshi has quit ()
00:22:52 [davb]
oh, thanks again rbm.
00:23:54 [davb]
rescue cd.. cool.. its a debian package
00:25:25 [rbm]
davb: around?
00:25:40 [rbm]
davb: What's that CSS reference site again?
00:25:40 [davb]
yeah...
00:25:57 [davb]
google for css reference, its the first one.
00:26:06 [davb]
thats what I always do :)
00:26:15 [davb]
we need a googlebot.
00:26:48 [rbm]
davb: which package you're talking about? I was referring to the LinuxCare CD, which I have an iso of (and a real one too, it's a credit-card-sized cd)
00:26:51 [rbm]
yeah
00:26:57 [rbm]
paje: google?
00:26:57 [paje]
i guess google is my friend... just found linpopup on google :)
00:27:07 [rbm]
paje: google css reference
00:27:07 [paje]
rbm: i'm not following you...
00:27:11 [rbm]
paje: #@)%!)@*#!%#@!!!
00:27:11 [paje]
rbm: excuse me?
00:28:26 [davb]
neat
00:28:32 [davb]
neat
00:28:42 [davb]
ok never mind i was crazy for a second.
00:28:59 [davb]
do you know where to get the iso? google is linking to a bunch of mailing list questions about it.
00:29:23 [davb]
trying linuxcare.com/open source projects
00:29:33 [davb]
bootable toolbox?
00:29:53 [davb]
ah thats it. now I need some mimi cds.
00:30:42 [davb]
i need to dl to my windows machine b/c my cdr is not working in linux right now...
00:31:04 [rbm]
davb: I have the iso and can make it available. hang on
00:31:36 [rbm]
It's been available for some time at http://www.brasileiro.net/roberto/bin/
00:31:42 [rbm]
look for the 2 linuxcare files
00:32:24 [rbm]
It's only 50 Mbs
00:33:43 [davb]
thanks.
00:33:53 [rbm]
np
00:33:58 [davb]
sorry, I am dling from linuxcare.com already.
00:34:08 [davb]
but thanks!
00:35:16 [rbm]
works too
00:36:50 [davb]
...must...resist...urge...to...check....email....
00:45:19 [davb]
great quote from the bboard: " The last points, I have looked at ez, uportal, Apache project, OpenCMS, etc. they do not even come close to having the same functions, support or advantages licensing that this weird group and OpenACS can offer. OpenACS could write the book on excellent support and enthusiasm. So again, actions speak louder than words. This group is full of action and honest opinions but not so good on diplomatic words. "
00:45:56 [davb]
davb has changed the topic to: Openacs: Free web toolkit, weird group, excellent support and enthusiasm
00:47:34 [rbm]
I like that too
00:48:00 [davb]
davb has changed the topic to: Openacs: Free web toolkit, 100% donb, 0% hype
00:52:42 [davb]
wow, a rescue CD is way nicer than a rescue floppy
00:55:19 [davb]
rbm: is there a way to get a console?
00:55:25 [davb]
nm :)
01:07:03 [davb]
one thing that is weird... the linuxcare cd says your "USE" of these products subjects you to the following licenses: GPL etc...
01:10:46 [davb]
ok. i repartitioned the drive. now I can reinstall debian.
01:14:26 [davb]
i think I have bad RAM...
01:14:41 [davb]
i am getting a crc error uncompressing the kernel from the debian cd
01:16:37 [rbm]
bad iso?
01:17:35 [davb]
i used it before...
01:17:40 [davb]
but it might be a bad cd
01:17:53 [davb]
trying the floppies
01:19:44 [davb]
argh
01:19:51 [davb]
still won;t initialize the partition.
01:19:55 [davb]
back to linuxcare...
01:36:22 [davb]
uhoh
01:36:27 [davb]
all signs point to bad ram...
01:36:35 [davb]
well only half of it is bad, i stil have 128mb
01:58:33 [davb]
ok that didn't help, replacing processor
02:00:51 [rbm]
yikes
02:00:55 [rbm]
what's the problem?
02:00:55 [paje]
hmmm... the problem is dotlrn, at least according to don, will fix alot of missing pieces in OpenACS.
02:01:03 [rbm]
lol
02:01:44 [rbm]
The most interesting things can come out of leaving paje listening to things :)
02:13:33 [davb]
didnt help
02:13:56 [rbm]
what's the symptom?
02:14:02 [davb]
either I get LI from lilo and then the machine hangs, or I get most of the way booted and it says error loading auto
02:14:13 [rbm]
paje: the syptoms are whatever you're feeling right now
02:14:13 [paje]
OK, rbm.
02:14:21 [davb]
or the debian installer says it can't read me partition table.
02:14:35 [rbm]
How big in the HD? Is your mobo pretty recent?
02:14:40 [davb]
yeah.
02:14:42 [davb]
20 GB
02:15:00 [davb]
wait... i think it bios is detecting the hd wrong. it says LRG instead of LBA
02:15:02 [rbm]
I suggest you upgrade the bios before trying anything else. I had this problem and that solved it.
02:15:07 [rbm]
bingo
02:15:17 [rbm]
s/upgrade/update/
02:15:20 [davb]
weird. it was working yesterday. ok. thanks for listening.
02:16:33 [rbm]
np
02:18:40 [davb]
ok, bios is already latest edition.
02:19:41 [davb]
yeah. i got past that step.
02:20:06 [davb]
i wish I could afford to pay someone to do this stuff... and I wish I had a 20gb tape drive :)
02:20:40 [rbm]
heheh
02:20:44 [davb]
installing debian.
02:20:58 [davb]
I just want to hack software. I am tired of playing with hardware.
02:22:08 [davb]
back to check the easy stuff first.
02:22:19 [davb]
i took out ram and it was a silly bios settting.
02:23:10 [davb]
* davb makes a boot floppy, just in case
02:24:20 [rbm]
"The most stupid, tiniest thing will usually be the culprit of large failures" -Roberto Mello
02:24:28 [davb]
yes I know.
02:24:48 [davb]
* davb will always look in the least obvious place first
02:25:20 [rbm]
When I saw you swaping CPUs I knew you were off base :)
02:25:33 [davb]
heh
02:25:40 [davb]
well I have a whole spare computer here.
02:25:51 [davb]
and it kept kernel panicking ans segfaulting
02:27:25 [davb]
and i should know better, i just yesterday fixed the aolserver crashing because the stack size was set to 128k still....
02:27:33 [rbm]
* rbm attends to his homework
02:27:35 [davb]
after reinstalling aolserver 2 times etc etc.
02:59:45 [rbm]
* rbm goes to catch the bus to campus

03:11:21 [abbaJ]

03:12:43 [davb]
real life
03:16:23 [abbaJ]
ahh
03:16:33 [abbaJ]
i must be losing my hipnes
03:16:42 [abbaJ]
have not heard that term before
03:20:09 [davb]
do i want ssh installed suid root?
03:27:29 [davb]
guess not :)
04:47:27 [davb]
rbm: thanks for all the help!
04:47:33 [davb]
and anyone else who helped.
04:47:49 [davb]
tomorrow i install qmail and aolserver.

15:14:47 [Jackal]
Good morning all
15:15:53 [Jackal]
can anybody point me to a program to easily write some xml? something with a excel style interface that doesn't require to many steps to make a simple xml file?
15:16:44 [Jackal]
i want serve some content out of a poor man's database
15:17:15 [til]
hi everybody
15:20:06 [til]
Jackal: what format is the database in? if it's in an oacs database it might be easiest to write it in .tcl ...
15:21:16 [Jackal]
not a real database: I'm trying to make a little directory page with a some biographical infomration, contact info for each person. I'd like to generate this from XML.
15:21:38 [Jackal]
the project its for wont be using a DB so that isn't an option.
15:22:21 [Jackal]
I just need a program to help me write clean XML - I've been doing this by hand but this would be a bit tedious for the data in question.
15:22:46 [til]
ah i see
15:22:54 [til]
emacs maybe?
15:23:16 [Jackal]
Like a mod?
15:23:19 [Jackal]
macro
15:24:09 [til]
psgml, it's a major mode ... C-c C-e for example gives a nice list of allowed elements at that point
15:24:52 [Jackal]
ic
15:24:59 [Jackal]
cool -- thanks
15:25:02 [til]
C-c / completes a currently open element etc. ... very handy
15:25:11 [Jackal]
nice
15:25:24 [rbm]
morning
15:25:29 [Jackal]
actually is there something to automate this a bit more?
15:26:09 [Jackal]
like I specify the structure at the begining and then I give it to a non techie for dataentry?
15:27:04 [til]
hmm, maybe morphon? but i've never actually used it and it's commercial
15:27:24 [Jackal]
doh ! - ok cool
15:29:34 [Jackal]
sigh- i'm surprised that there isn't some open source equiv
15:30:58 [til]
there certainly is something out there
15:31:40 [Jackal]
yeah - I've been searching. I was wondering if there was some great tool that everybody was using...
15:32:15 [Jackal]
this looks promising: http://www.xmlmind.com/xmleditor/
15:48:35 [davb]
hey, there is a new improved chump with editable comments!
15:50:49 [Jackal]
chump?
15:50:49 [paje]
i think chump is a bot that keeps track of URLS, the logs can be found at http://www.thedesignexperience.org/openacs/ircblog/

15:51:13 [davb]
server is down.. back up soon
15:51:16 [markd2]
speaking of which...
15:54:54 [davb]
hopefully pop3 is working.
15:55:16 [davb]
argh
15:55:27 [davb]
DNS is not updating, I hate roadrunner and the cache
15:55:48 [markd2]
2 out of 3 nameservers my isp has have stale old data
15:55:51 [markd2]
alltel--
15:55:53 [markd2]

15:57:43 [davb]
ok, i think everything is running.
15:57:53 [rbm]
I laughed a lot with this one yesterday when I asked davb "what's the problem" with his server
15:58:08 [davb]
now I have to wait to see if mail is actually getting here.
15:58:19 [davb]
luckily when my server was down, the ip address changed.
15:58:28 [davb]
ooops,
15:58:36 [davb]
i forgot to install aolserver :)
15:58:53 [markd2]
heh
15:59:00 [markd2]
details, details
16:00:27 [davb]
damn job, they want me to do work... bbl
16:02:16 [rbm]
Yeah, they should just pay you to hack away on AOLserver
16:02:21 [rbm]
and OpenACS
16:09:48 [markd2]
markd2 has quit ("Bork")
16:09:52 [davb]
hopefully.

* rbm would like to have a digital camera
16:11:33 [til]
* til wants to have his digicam back
16:12:24 [til]
i just squashed it in a car door, why is that no warranty case
16:12:35 [davb]
shagster: you available?
16:12:55 [davb]
or anyone else. I wanted to dl the openacs prepared aolserver he did.
16:12:55 [til]
digital ixus, still one of the nicest ones
16:13:18 [davb]
til, you should have bought the "extended coverage"
16:13:24 [davb]
:)
16:14:28 [davb]
nm about aolserver, I have a copy on the other machine.
16:15:21 [til]
at least i did not do it deliberately, that should qualify for warranty
16:16:23 [davb]
yeah!
16:16:28 [davb]
the mail is flowing
16:21:07 [Jackal]
Jackal has quit ("ChatZilla 0.8.6 [Mozilla rv:0.9.9/20020311]")

aargh, why is a user on the test system part of the Main Site Parties group, and on the other system not?
20:30:35 [til]
the data of one system was copied via pg_dump to the other, so i would everything expect to be the same ...
20:31:43 [davb]
very strange
20:32:04 [til]
one system runs on pg 7.1 and the other on 7.2 ... oh no ...
20:32:46 [davb]
still, how would it not be in a group... that seems like a weird incompatability.
20:33:18 [davb]
now I have to reinstall oracle and dotlrn..
20:33:20 [til]
at least it looks like he is not in a group from the acs-admin/www/users/one page
20:33:42 [davb]
those pages are compulsive liars
20:33:54 [til]
so yor are getting a dotlrn pro installer, ey?
20:34:14 [davb]
well, I needed space to backup my data from the failed server. so I blew away the oracle install.
20:34:21 [davb]
now the server is working ok.
20:34:34 [davb]
the annoying thing is that server has a 20GB drive that has 17GB free..
20:34:41 [davb]
my hardware is all misallocated :)
20:35:13 [til]
* til promises not to boast with his new 40G laptop drive
20:36:06 [davb]
how do I get rid of all the packages apt stuffed in var/cache/apt?

can i just rm them?

it was working earlier...
20:41:27 [davb]
ah
20:41:29 [davb]
found it.
20:41:39 [davb]
its a security thing..
20:41:45 [davb]
qmail is too smart for my own good :)
20:45:03 [davb]
argh
20:45:10 [davb]
screwed up permissions.

anyone know about vpopmail?
21:00:47 [talli]
shagster does
21:02:49 [davb]
* davb pokes shagster
21:03:03 [davb]
my permissions got screwed up when I copied over the old directories.
21:11:34 [shagster]
Oww!
21:11:52 [shagster]
Watch where you stick that thing!
21:11:57 [davb]
heh
21:12:23 [davb]
any idea off-hand what permissions should be on my /home/vpopmail/domains directories and files?
21:12:33 [shagster]
Just a second
21:12:33 [davb]
qmail apparently can't open it.
21:14:29 [shagster]
vhost1:~ # ls -ld /home/vpopmail
21:14:30 [shagster]
drwxr-xr-x 12 vpopmail vchkpw 227 Mar 22 13:19 /home/vpopmail
21:14:32 [shagster]
vhost1:~ # ls -ld /home/vpopmail/domains/alal.net
21:14:32 [shagster]
drwx------ 4 vpopmail vchkpw 255 Mar 25 03:13 /home/vpopmail/domains/alal.net
21:14:32 [shagster]
vhost1:~ # ls -ld /home/vpopmail/domains/alal.net/mkovach
21:14:32 [shagster]
drwx------ 3 vpopmail vchkpw 82 Mar 25 03:12 /home/vpopmail/domains/alal.net/mkovach
21:15:04 [shagster]
vhost1:~ # ls -ld /home/vpopmail/domains
21:15:04 [shagster]
drwx------ 59 vpopmail vchkpw 1982 Mar 31 11:02 /home/vpopmail/domains
21:15:19 [davb]
ah, must be my delivery script.
21:15:30 [shagster]
What is the error ?
21:15:31 [paje]
i think the error is generated by the browser.
21:15:49 [davb]
Unable_to_switch_to_/home/vpopmail/domains/thedesignexperience.org:_access_denied
21:16:32 [shagster]
did you reload the system or such ?
21:16:38 [davb]
yes.
21:16:45 [davb]
it was working earlier today though...
21:16:50 [davb]
I suspect I did something dumb :)
21:17:03 [shagster]
grep vpopmail /etc/passwd, what is the uid ?
21:17:19 [davb]
I copied the UID over to make sure it was the same. 89
21:18:08 [shagster]
gid for vchkpw the same (and everything in /var/qmail/users/assign
21:18:15 [davb]
checking.. thanks...
21:18:16 [shagster]
set right) ?
21:19:05 [davb]
hmm. those files /users/assign, are owned by root...
21:19:12 [davb]
that is probably wrong.
21:19:29 [shagster]
Nope, that is fine
21:19:35 [davb]
ok.
21:19:46 [davb]
hmm
21:19:55 [davb]
ok now I get Uh-oh:_.qmail_has_prog_delivery_but_has_x_bit_set._(#4.7.0)/
21:20:07 [shagster]
Gruop on /var/qmail/users (the directory) should be qmail
21:20:26 [shagster]
Ahh.... .qmail file,
21:20:57 [shagster]
check /home/vpopmail/doamins/<domainname>/<username>/.qmail-*
21:21:33 [davb]
tada
21:21:42 [davb]
I did chmod -x .qmail-etc...
21:21:44 [shagster]
more /home/vpopmail/domains/domainname/.qmail-* file :)
21:21:45 [davb]
thanks!
21:22:20 [shagster]
Sure, send beer to Shagster, 6th Level of Hell, Cleveland :)
21:22:32 [davb]
ok. np
21:23:16 [davb]
* davb makes a note to make sure to retain users and permissions when he copies over a bunch of files next time...
21:23:34 [shagster]
use rsync if you can
21:23:48 [davb]
ah. i'll all that to my bag of tricks.

so, having a custom 404 page in aolserver works via the redirects config section, right?
23:17:49 [til]
any way that the custom 404 page can tell the url that was not found initially?

til: aolserver, or openacs?
23:20:43 [til]
openacs
23:20:48 [til]
both actually ;)
23:20:50 [tontsa]
tontsa has quit (Read error: 110 (Connection timed out))
23:21:27 [davb]
I think the new way in openacs is to let the rp handle it and serve up a special template. in that case the url is probably available.
23:21:39 [davb]
I am not sure it the redirect from url is available in aolserver.
23:23:01 [til]
and how do i tell the rp that it should handle it? do you know if patching the rp is involved?
23:23:26 [davb]
I am not sure if this got checked in...
23:23:37 [til]
* til rereads that bboard thread
23:24:56 [davb]
ah.
23:25:26 [davb]
its not in there. you need to change calls to ns_returnnotfound to ad_serve_template my_404_template
23:25:52 [davb]
if you want a "templated" 404 page, you need to do this.
23:26:20 [davb]
I wonder if the redircting url is in the referrer header...
23:26:22 [til]
ah, ok
23:26:46 [til]
referer ... hmm, depends on the user agent i am afraid
23:29:07 [davb]
ick
23:29:25 [davb]
does returnnotfound do a redirect in the browser?
23:30:39 [til]
i think so, didn't try
23:34:35 [til]
Error: return: failed to redirect '404': exceeded recursion limit of 3
23:34:43 [til]
??
23:35:07 [davb]
i think that means it can't find your notfound file, so it returns a notfound etc...
23:36:01 [til]
hmm, maybe because i tried it with a .tcl, not .adp
23:44:40 [til]
maybe that doesn't work with the rp anymore, anyway, neophytos' patch works great
