04:44:02 [Grax]
hi davb. how's it going?
04:44:09 [davb]
ok, except I can
04:44:19 [davb]
't find a working floppy disk anwwhere
04:44:37 [Grax]
I know the feeling. I never have one when I need one
04:45:03 [Grax]
I'm considering buying a usb memory card reader and some cards
04:46:46 [davb]
i am up to plan C bootable cdrom...
04:46:59 [davb]
ah... seems to be working....
04:47:20 [Grax]
that's another thing I want. I want a nice bootable sysadmin cd
04:47:57 [davb]
darn
04:48:01 [davb]
that didn't work.
04:48:14 [Grax]
why not?
04:48:36 [davb]
crc error, it said i should fo es2fsck on the cdrom :)
04:49:19 [Grax]
yea. maybe you should just reformat that cd
04:49:39 [davb]
oh.. i got to the install screen

05:09:06 [davb]
didn't help
05:09:11 [davb]
argh
05:09:26 [dwalker]
network drivers?
05:09:33 [davb]
99 times out of 100 i am getting a crc error when it uncompresses the linux kernel.
05:09:52 [davb]
nope, it suddenly decided halfway through the install that my hard drive had disappeared.
05:09:52 [dwalker]
sounds serious
05:10:27 [davb]
hmmmm
05:10:33 [dwalker]
bad ide controller? didn't you say you had a crc error from the cdrom?
05:10:46 [davb]
i hope not
05:11:06 [davb]
well origianlly the system mysteriously crashed.
05:11:15 [davb]
after that it keeps getting worse :(
05:11:58 [dwalker]
sounds like salvage time to me
05:12:09 [davb]
yeah, luckily i didn't make a backup
05:12:16 [davb]
so I just have to reinsall everything.
05:12:22 [davb]
I am trying to rescue my email.
05:12:33 [dwalker]
can you put the hard drive in another computer?
05:12:51 [davb]
yeah, I was trying the other way, putting another drive in that system.
05:12:55 [davb]
but I think your way is easier.
05:13:23 [dwalker]
could be
05:13:40 [dwalker]
good luck with that

anyone awake? I have a very important question :)
14:18:41 [davb]
hi Psychephylax
14:18:55 [davb]
I am attempting to resurrect my mail and web server...
14:19:27 [Psychephylax]
good
14:19:34 [Psychephylax]
Dave, how much do you know about procmail?
14:19:38 [Psychephylax]
or vacation
14:19:54 [Psychephylax]
I overlooked a slight problem when I set up my vacation on my soon to be deleted account
14:19:59 [Psychephylax]
it doesn't forward the mail to me!
14:20:41 [davb]
that seems bad.
14:20:43 [davb]
hmmm
14:20:53 [davb]
I know nothing about procmail or vacation though...
14:22:51 [Psychephylax]
doh
14:23:21 [davb]
I wish someone was forwarding my mail right about now...
14:23:49 [davb]
i am debating whether or not to try to install qmail on my desktop machine to capture the mail until I get the server running again...
14:24:33 [rbm]
just use fetchmail
14:24:47 [davb]
me?
14:24:47 [paje]
you are dangerous
14:24:51 [davb]
heh
14:24:55 [davb]
I know
14:25:00 [rbm]
and procmail has some of the best man pages ever. Check the procmailex man page
14:25:24 [Psychephylax]
if I had time...
14:25:32 [Psychephylax]
My account is gonna get nuked any minute
14:25:49 [rbm]
can't you just grab your mail then?
14:25:57 [rbm]
before it gets nuked?
14:26:12 [Psychephylax]
yes
14:26:17 [davb]
how will procmail forward mail from your nonexistent account anyway?
14:26:20 [Psychephylax]
but what about the mail that will come in for the next 4 months?
14:26:24 [rbm]
I can send you my .procmailrc file
14:26:34 [Psychephylax]
it's not deleted...just locked out that I can't check mail via pop
14:26:37 [Psychephylax]
I can use .forward
14:26:41 [rbm]
yeah
14:26:44 [rbm]
* rbm goes to shower
14:26:48 [Psychephylax]
but I wanted to do .forward + message back to sender about account change
14:26:57 [davb]
ah. cool. good luck.
14:27:05 [rbm]
Psychephylax: Oh, then procmail would be the thing, or vacation
14:27:11 [Psychephylax]
Exactly
14:27:24 [Psychephylax]
But I don't know how to set that up and I have not much time
14:29:03 [rbm]
Here's a procmail vacation recipe:
14:29:06 [rbm]

17:07:29 [markd2]
ouch

17:11:12 [talli]
holy
17:11:13 [rbm]
Excellent for my employer.
17:11:20 [talli]
what was the package?
17:11:25 [rbm]
davb: Yeah, experience is good.
17:12:30 [rbm]
talli: It's a package that collects and organizes school incidents as required by federal law. Schools input incidents, offenders, victims, etc. The system gives them ways to generate all sorts of reports, including graphs and annual reports.
17:12:43 [talli]
nice
17:13:24 [rbm]
It's part of the "Safe and drug-free schools" federal program
17:14:07 [rbm]
heh
17:16:08 [rbm]
Any apache folks here?
17:22:54 [davb]
nope... what port if IMAP?
17:23:38 [rbm]
cat /etc/services | grep -i imap

17:29:07 [davb]

17:31:13 [markd2]

im looking for a solaris or iPlanet channel, and I assume this is not it
17:50:02 [markd2]
hi
17:50:05 [markd2]
sorry, it is not
17:50:12 [markd2]
although some of us solaris
17:50:22 [markd2]
but I don't think anyone has iplanet
17:50:32 [markd2]
(anyone here, that is :-)

17:52:39 [davb]
argh!
17:52:44 [rbm]
blergh!
17:54:06 [markd2]
blorg!
17:54:37 [rbm]
apt-get build-dep libqt3-psql
17:54:47 [rbm]
installs everything I need to build that package
17:54:53 [rbm]
apt rocks!
18:01:40 [davb]
hmmm.
18:02:04 [davb]
I am getting this in my qmail-send log : alert: cannot start: unable to open mutex
18:02:15 [davb]
could it be a file permission problem?
18:09:07 [rbm]
* rbm shrugs
18:09:35 [davb]
darnies
18:10:01 [davb]
I am trying to move the qmail install from a barely working harddrive to my machine that still works.
18:10:09 [davb]
the smtp server is listening
18:10:20 [davb]
so I can receive.
18:11:17 [davb]
pop3 is working.
18:11:36 [rbm]
coltrane: join #linux on fslc.usu.edu . lawrence has done quite a bit of work with iplanet and says he could help.
18:12:42 [rbm]
I think it'll take a good while to build all this on my machine.
18:13:54 [abbaJ]
rbm: apt is a beautiful thing
18:14:06 [rbm]
abbaJ: Yeah. I luv it
18:15:02 [abbaJ]
the new package manager is nice too
18:15:04 [abbaJ]
aptitude
18:15:16 [abbaJ]
much better than dselect
18:15:19 [abbaJ]
*shudder*
18:16:02 [rbm]
Is that the ncurses one?
18:16:09 [rbm]
I think I've used that and didn't like it.
18:16:12 [abbaJ]
yes
18:16:17 [rbm]
I like synaptic, but it's graphical
18:16:29 [abbaJ]
hrmm...i haven't tried that one
18:17:12 [rbm]

cool

"Actually, the Module class of module is the superclass of the Class class of class. " <-- From the Ruby documentation
18:18:34 [talli]
someone say Brazil?
18:19:00 [rbm]
<singing> Brasil... meu Brasil brasileiro... </singing>
18:19:02 [talli]
* talli starts to shake his booty as the samba starts in his head. anyone seen a conga line around here?
18:19:15 [abbaJ]
rbm: that's a rough looking toolkit tho
18:19:28 [rbm]
abbaJ: wings? It's all right.
18:19:31 [talli]
you should see their women!
18:19:54 [abbaJ]
is it using wings?
18:20:01 [abbaJ]
i can't tell
18:20:05 [abbaJ]
hehe
18:20:20 [rbm]
hehe
18:21:02 [abbaJ]
if i want a gui i usually use kpackage
18:21:27 [davb]
I think I need to recompile qmail, the uid is compiled in.
18:21:35 [rbm]
kpackage did some weird stuff and didn't really work for me.
18:21:44 [rbm]
synaptic does things the unix way
18:22:12 [abbaJ]
i used to have problems with kpackage back in kde1, but i've used the new version quite a bit and it's pretty nice
18:22:29 [talli]
redhat really does suck
18:22:42 [rbm]
talli: What makes you say that?
18:22:50 [talli]
after using apt for a couple of weeks, apt-rpm and up2date don't compare
18:22:59 [abbaJ]
yes
18:23:02 [talli]
i can't find half the things i could with apt
18:23:13 [abbaJ]
the big deal with apt isn't necesarily the tools
18:23:23 [abbaJ]
it's just the nice HUGE archive of packages debian has
18:23:26 [abbaJ]
that are all high quality
18:23:29 [talli]
right
18:23:41 [abbaJ]
sure there's red carpet
18:23:43 [abbaJ]
or up2date
18:23:51 [abbaJ]
but they don't have any of the packages i need
18:23:52 [talli]
i won't use red carpet
18:23:56 [talli]
i don't trust ximian
18:23:58 [rbm]
Yeah, I hated all the searching I had to do with rpms
18:24:00 [talli]
they're sketchy
18:24:12 [talli]
ximian's received investment from MS
18:24:19 [davb]
* davb recompiles qmail
18:24:34 [talli]
anyone that is building "GPL" software with the backing of MS is doing something stinky
18:24:35 [abbaJ]
speaking of qmail, anyoneused the debs?
18:24:38 [abbaJ]
they are very nice. :)
18:24:38 [talli]
oh, and redcarpet kinda sucks
18:25:08 [davb]
argh.
18:25:09 [abbaJ]
ya
18:25:11 [davb]
it won't build
18:25:16 [davb]
qmail deb that is.
18:25:24 [abbaJ]
hmm
18:25:28 [abbaJ]
i used ita while back
18:25:33 [abbaJ]
and was very impressed
18:25:35 [davb]
yeah, it worked last time.
18:25:45 [abbaJ]
unstable tree?
18:25:49 [davb]
yes
18:26:19 [davb]
i got alot of these: warning: return type of `main' is not `int'
18:26:29 [abbaJ]
hrmm
18:26:31 [davb]
and this: fatal: unable to find user alias
18:26:59 [abbaJ]
send an email to the package maintainer
18:27:06 [davb]
oh, good idea.
18:27:29 [davb]
i suspect its me though...
18:27:45 [abbaJ]
well, they always like to know if their package fails
18:28:12 [davb]
do you recall if the package creates all the necessary users and stuff for qmail?
18:28:28 [talli]
abbaJ: who are you in meatspace?
18:29:01 [rbm]
davb: djb declares his main's as void.
18:29:13 [davb]
ah, so that is just a warning...
18:29:19 [davb]
its the missing user.
18:30:42 [rbm]
fatal messages aren't warnings :)
18:30:50 [rbm]
but the "main" stuff are
18:31:41 [davb]
heh
18:38:26 [davb]
the package seems to not be creating the users.
18:39:05 [davb]
aha
18:39:07 [davb]
fixed.
18:39:09 [davb]
my fault
18:41:51 [rbm]
of course :)
18:42:05 [rbm]
It's going to take a long while to build qt3 on my wimpy machine
18:45:57 [davb]
argh
18:46:22 [davb]
qmail conflicts with exim, which is required for the mutt package.
18:51:57 [rbm]
mutt probably depends on an mta, not exim specifically
18:52:13 [rbm]
Depends: libc6 (>= 2.2.4-4), libncurses5 (>= 5.2.20020112a-1), libsasl7, exim | mail-transport-agent
18:52:28 [rbm]
If you have a mail-transport-agent package installed, you should be okay.
18:52:43 [rbm]
Are you compiling qmail from scratch?
18:52:45 [davb]
hopefull qmail will fullfil that.
18:52:48 [rbm]
(no source package)
18:52:53 [davb]
I tried using the source pcakge.
18:53:09 [rbm]
Why are you using qmail anyway?
18:53:20 [davb]
no clue :)
18:53:34 [davb]
I should pick something easier that supports virtual domains.
18:53:38 [davb]
this is a mail server.
18:55:35 [davb]
I think I will just wait until I get home and attempt to fix the server instead of setting up this backup server.
18:55:39 [rbm]
Just install exim with something on top that supports vdomains

21:03:01 [davb]
anyone know any handy disk rescue/repair tools for linux?
21:07:33 [markd2]
outside of cat /dev/zero > /dev/hda, I dunno
21:07:44 [davb]
heh
21:09:22 [davb]

plus my y finder is getting tired

i think e2fsck will take A for 'yes to all', or you can run it with a cmd line switch to do the same. e2fsck -y or something.
21:12:10 [davb]
I did, that, it said some kind of inconsistency, run manually. :)
21:12:11 [denshi]
if all that fails, use: "yes | e2fsck /dev/hddavb"
21:12:27 [davb]

time to get a linux box here at work.

21:15:54 [rbm]

huh. I was successful.

21:16:40 [rbm]
denshi: were you rebuilding that package too?
21:16:57 [davb]
* davb learns what a screen session is...
21:17:08 [denshi]
yeah, I did it all from source, as the debs didn't work for me.
21:17:14 [rbm]
it fails to find postgres.h because it's looking under /usr/include/postgresql when it should be looking at /usr/include/postgresql/server
21:17:30 [denshi]
actually the debs didn't even let me run the Qt GUI tools, like QTdesigner.
21:17:47 [rbm]
but with the Qt preprocessor crap, I don't know where to give it an extra include path
21:17:57 [rbm]
denshi: I got those working without trouble
21:18:35 [davb]
* davb apt-get installs screen
21:18:58 [denshi]
hmm...
21:19:23 [davb]
thanks alot rbm!
21:20:11 [rbm]
davb: run 'screen'. Run fsck, C-a C-d will "detach" the screen, so you can logoff. When you log back in, just do "screen -r" to reattach and it'll be back to where it was.
21:20:28 [rbm]
If you get disconnected even without "detaching" you just have to reconnect and screen -r
21:20:54 [davb]
nifty
21:21:08 [davb]
excellent, it can run while I am driving home.

* rbm was being picky. sorry :)
22:49:52 [denshi]
I think you're only allowed to get picky with portugese.
23:03:38 [rbm]
"porque" is part of portuguese.
23:04:19 [rbm]
or rather, is a portuguese word, but is probably present in other latin-derived languages. Since you didn't specify your locale, I assumed pt_BR :-)
23:10:46 [denshi]
so I'm messing with the oacs4.5 templates for the first time ever..
23:11:24 [rbm]
cool
23:12:00 [denshi]
in the default-master.adp page, there's a tag that's something like: <body @multiple blahblbahblah monkey sheep multiple@> <slave> </body>
23:12:11 [denshi]
that's a bad deal in my perspective.
23:12:59 [denshi]
how do you write in things on the master template before the @multiple@ tags, when the multiple is embedded in the body tag?
23:15:08 [denshi]
in other words, how do you write a site header in the master template?
23:18:14 [rbm]
change default-master.tcl and .adp if you don't want the @multiple@ stuff
23:18:14 [paje]
rbm: that doesn't look right
23:18:24 [rbm]
paje: maybe
23:18:24 [paje]
rbm: excuse me?
23:20:48 [denshi]
did I miss something, or has paje gained sentience? or just adp parsing skills?
23:22:30 [denshi]
no, I want the @multiple@ stuff, b/c that's how the page is built. What bothers me is that some fragments coming out of @multiple@ aren't complete HTML blocks. For instance, the m tag is inside <body ...> because the first block out of @multiple@ is "bgcolor='#FFFFFF' >"
23:22:54 [denshi]
so i think that @multiple@ knows too much about its calling environment.
23:25:19 [rbm]
That's just because that's how default-master.tcl is setup. You can change that.
