* til wonders if /dev/null is guaranteed to exist on all systems that openacs runs on
17:14:02 [Starets]
I think there are still people who have coerced it to run on Windows, where there's no /dev/null.
17:14:55 [til]
doesnt cygwin provide it?
17:15:05 [Starets]
Don't know; sorry.
17:15:11 [til]
me neither ...
17:16:09 [til]
i was just wondering if it is save to add 2>/dev/null to some exec calls in the openacs core
17:16:38 [til]
because package installation just failed for me because of tar's warning that the file dates are in the future
17:17:22 [Starets]
Can you guarantee that the shell will support "2>" syntax? I don't think all of them do; won't the script then fail is OpenACS is run under the wrong shell? (I think C-shell variants don't do 2>)
17:17:58 [til]
i mean the tcl exec, not the shell
17:18:09 [Starets]
Right. My bad.
17:18:31 [Starets]
DOS used to support NUL: as a device equivalent to /dev/null.
17:19:07 [Starets]
Crap. There's a bunch of old synapses that will now fire all day long, filling my brain up with no-longer-useful facts.
17:19:24 [til]
haha ... maybe one day openacs will run under dos
17:19:49 [Starets]
I'm not porting it. If I have to do an obsolete port, it will be to TOPS-20.
17:20:31 [davb]
argh /dev/null is supported under cygwin
17:20:39 [til]
argh thanks
17:20:51 [Starets]
Thank God.
17:21:26 [til]
under mac os X too i suppose
17:21:51 [Starets]
yes.
17:22:21 [til]
damn, now i have to create a patch ;)
17:23:45 [davb]
what is 2> ?
17:24:03 [Starets]
redirects file descriptor 2 for the new process; 2 is usually standard error
17:24:14 [davb]
Ok. thanks :)
17:24:20 [til]
some programs like tar output useless warnings to standard error
17:24:39 [davb]
ah. that is what I was wondering, if we might want to catch the errors.
17:25:01 [til]
which causes exec to think the program execution failed with an error
17:25:03 [Starets]
if you're using tar, you may have bigger portability problems than messages from stderr. Some have GNUtar, some don't.
17:25:40 [til]
Starets: but that's already in the core ... maybe they are using only options that are portable
17:26:11 [til]
it's used to build and extract .apm files
17:27:52 [Starets]
It might be better to abstract a tar interface with the options we need and then have everybody call that, so that if there are tar portability issues, they can be fixed in one place.
17:29:33 [til]
hmm, there's a command called apm_tar_cmd, which currently just returns the string "tar"
17:29:51 [til]
not exactly what you mean ... typical acs hack
17:34:07 [miguel_]
i am interested in the acs-lang package, any tips that I should take into account?
17:34:53 [Starets]
Starets has left #openACS
17:35:25 [til]
miguel_: i think only 20% of what was planned is implemented as far as i can remember
17:36:50 [til]
language selection and the display of the strings work fine i think, but you have to write the message catalogs by hand
17:40:04 [anlater]
anlater (~anlater@212.34.222.62) has joined #OpenACS
17:41:19 [miguel_]
message catalogs?
17:41:38 [miguel_]
i just have to install the package and all the string messages will appear in Spanish?
17:42:25 [davb]
not quite. Do any of the other pacakges support it? I haven't seen one.
17:44:20 [til]
message catalogs are files that map keys to language specific strings. You have to replace all occurences of strings that you want to translate with those keys and then add the translation to the message catalog.
17:44:42 [til]
davb: me neither
18:03:17 [miguel_]
ok thanks
18:03:28 [miguel_]
where is all the info about acs-lang?
18:03:57 [talli]
miguel_, as usual, you might want to ping neophytos (k2pts) about this stuff. he has some ideas for solving the problems
18:04:30 [til]
there's a bit in acs-lang/www/doc/
18:05:52 [miguel_]
is in the OACS distro?
18:06:11 [miguel_]
k2pts he is not on right?
18:08:23 [til]
miguel_: sure, if you have openacs4 installed just add acs-lang via the apm and the the link to the docs should appear beneath /doc/ on your installation
18:09:05 [talli]
miguel_, k2pts is not here right now. if you send him an email, though, he will respond, or you can ask him to come to the IRC channel
18:09:08 [talli]
he'll sign up then
18:12:13 [til]
also searching for acs-lang on openacs.org/bboard yields some interesting, though somewhat offtopic information, e.g. about theology
18:12:49 [talli]
til, the same can be said of this IRC channel
18:12:59 [talli]
although, replace theology with "vinod's pants"
18:13:10 [til]
holy shit, yes
18:13:32 [talli]
yes, it's a truly amazing revelation
