crap...I'm out of parentesis
01:43:23 [Spork]
* Spork throws a & at Dave
01:43:58 [davb]
I hate pl/pgsql
01:44:06 [davb]
its possessed.
01:44:09 [Spork]
Postgres or oracle?
01:44:15 [Spork]
they all look the same to me
01:44:26 [davb]
I have a function that works fine in psql but is broken in OpenACS
01:44:28 [davb]
Postgresql.
01:44:36 [Spork]
I'm not good at either
01:44:37 [Spork]
lol
01:44:43 [Spork]
* Spork waves a white flag taped to a spork
01:44:45 [davb]
anyway, it doesn't give an error. It is supposed to delete a row, but it just doesn't.
01:44:48 [Spork]
i surrender
01:44:58 [Spork]
Have you tried doing this at the console?
01:45:01 [davb]
I am just complaining now anyway.... I'll fix it later
01:45:07 [davb]
Yeah. psql. it works fine.
01:45:16 [davb]
I hate when that happens.
01:45:17 [Spork]
odd
01:54:58 [Spork]
bah
01:55:01 [Spork]
I don't want to write this
01:55:15 [davb]
I also hate when that happens
01:55:17 [davb]
what is it?
01:55:41 [Spork]
My boss asked me to write a status report and why this tool as well as I am a valuable asset to the company
01:55:47 [Spork]
* Spork never did this type of a thing
01:56:00 [davb]
ack!
01:56:51 [davb]
Well you'll have to learn sometime...
01:58:47 [Spork]
I make good software
01:58:49 [Spork]
I need job
01:58:50 [Spork]
you keep me
01:58:53 [Spork]
:/
02:00:31 [davb]
heh
02:00:53 [Spork]
no good?
02:00:55 [davb]
Well did anyone do a schedule or anything for this project when it started?
02:01:02 [Spork]
no
02:01:07 [davb]
ack
02:01:15 [Spork]
don't get me started on THAT
02:01:30 [davb]
ok. anyway it doesn't matter if the software is good or not, just what benefits it will bring to the company
02:01:39 [davb]
how it will make or save money.
02:01:59 [Spork]
ahh good idea
02:02:12 [davb]
Thats the valuable part.
02:02:12 [Spork]
ok, I s'pose I will start writing
02:02:39 [davb]
good luck
02:02:55 [Spork]
you leaving?
02:03:05 [Spork]
Must be party night for Dave ;)
02:03:33 [davb]
nah. I have to do some photoshop stuff.
02:03:41 [Spork]
ah
02:03:52 [davb]
I have 2 kids, I barely remember HOW to party...
02:06:24 [Spork]
hah
02:07:11 [Spork]
i have 0 kids and I don't know how to party
02:07:13 [Spork]
dont' feel alone
02:08:25 [davb]
heh. Obviously not if you are writing a status doc at 10:17 on saturday night :)
02:08:39 [Spork]
uhh huh
02:08:51 [Spork]
Hey, not my fault my best friend works insane hours from 2 am to 12noon
02:09:55 [Spork]
how do I start the damn thing
02:10:11 [Spork]
We don't even have a name for this thing !
02:10:21 [Spork]
How do I refer to my "project"
02:10:22 [Spork]
lol
02:10:33 [docwolf]

02:10:37 [Spork]
hello
02:10:38 [docwolf]

02:12:23 [Spork]
I should be a true manager...outsource
02:12:27 [davb]

02:12:42 [Spork]
Anyone willing to do an E-R diagram for 50$?
02:13:03 [Spork]
:)
02:13:06 [davb]
Spork: thats it!
02:13:11 [Spork]
What's it?
02:13:21 [davb]
A web site that spits out E-R diagrams.
02:13:31 [davb]
Take credit cards. You'd be all set.
02:13:35 [Spork]
* Spork checks dave's insanity meter
02:13:39 [Spork]

02:14:10 [Spork]
* Spork smacks dave around a bit...Now, start making sense
02:14:22 [Spork]
ok, anyone wanna give me a spiffy name for my project?
02:15:25 [davb]
ok. Cablevision-on-ice?
02:15:29 [Spork]
lol
02:15:30 [Spork]
nope
02:15:39 [Spork]
actually
02:15:44 [Spork]
that might be reality soon
02:16:07 [Spork]
the DHG project they spend at least a billion dollars on and the quality of their digital cable is not very good
02:16:24 [Spork]
it skips
02:16:28 [Spork]
hmmm
02:16:29 [Spork]
question
02:16:49 [Spork]
is there a way to add yourself to some sort of a list so you don't get logged?
02:17:09 [Spork]
i just realized I shouldn't be saying some things in here especially if my boss ever finds these logs :)
02:17:18 [davb]
uh no.
02:17:21 [davb]
loggy, off
02:17:28 [davb]
that works.
02:17:30 [Spork]
loggy off
02:17:34 [Spork]
heh
02:17:37 [Spork]
loggy go sleep :P
02:18:06 [Spork]
I got an optical mouse for my KVM
02:18:16 [Spork]
No more mouse pads and worrying about sliding off the mouse pad
02:18:25 [Spork]
I have cool mouse pads
02:18:28 [Spork]
custom made :)
02:18:42 [Spork]
And not those crappy quality ones that start to fade in a month
02:19:02 [davb]
Photoshop 6 in win98se with 192mb of RAM takes 5-10 secs for each mouse click. this sucks.
02:19:11 [Spork]
ummm
02:19:14 [Spork]
what processor speed?
02:19:36 [davb]
AMD K62-400
02:19:42 [Spork]
ah
02:19:47 [Spork]
but that's still too slow
02:19:57 [davb]
Aha i see the problem. I am using 250mb or RAM or so...
02:20:10 [Spork]
just for photoshop?
02:20:12 [Spork]
Jebus!
02:20:15 [davb]
No for everything.
02:20:27 [davb]
A clean win98 uses about 150MB
02:20:53 [Spork]
Ummmm
02:21:03 [Spork]
That's too much
02:21:09 [Spork]
You sure it's that much?
02:21:36 [Spork]
I have Win2K with 640 megs and a Win98Se box with 384...Everything runs fine usually
02:21:44 [davb]
Maybe a little lower, over 100 MB. At least according to the System Monitor. I have tried on a fresh install.
02:22:00 [Spork]
I wouldn't believe the system monitor
02:22:08 [Spork]
it's probably as buggy as the rest of windows
02:22:35 [davb]
yeah.
02:22:39 [Spork]
Right now I have Photoshop open and it uses 30 megs
02:22:51 [Spork]
on Win2K
02:22:59 [davb]
I know. I closed photoshop and I am down to about 200 MB used.
02:23:07 [davb]
I am running MIRC and Outlook express.
02:23:32 [davb]
WOW. Outlook express is using like 10MB
02:23:43 [davb]
I'll check my email in Linux from now on.

Yeah. I should put 2000 on here one of these days. I want to get a spare HD to backup my crap first.
02:25:39 [Spork]
yeah
02:28:17 [Spork]
I should really use Linux more
02:28:23 [Spork]
but I don't know for what =)
02:29:15 [davb]
If I didn't do graphics, I would never leave. But that is because all the web and tcl hacking I do runs in Linux.
02:30:03 [Spork]
yeah for scripting I would be using Linux
02:30:06 [Spork]
but I don't have to script yet
02:30:15 [Spork]
Well, not home at least

Hi talli
15:28:06 [davb]
Can anyone recommend a good place to buy RAM?
15:29:12 [Spork]
yea
15:29:24 [Spork]
online ok?
15:29:28 [davb]
yep.
15:29:41 [Spork]
Here's my collection of online shopping places:
15:29:47 [markd2]
SporksRAMfromOldMachines.com
15:29:51 [Spork]
http://www.newegg.com
15:29:52 [chump]
A: http://www.newegg.com from Spork
15:30:03 [davb]
heh
15:30:07 [Spork]
A:| A very cheap high quality Place to buy computer hardware
15:30:07 [chump]
titled item A
15:30:09 [davb]
thats OK, my machine is old.
15:30:18 [Spork]

15:32:01 [Spork]
I highly recommend NewEgg
15:32:18 [davb]
that have good shipping rates. The place I looked was $15.00
15:32:24 [Spork]
Their prices are cheap, shipping is cheap as well and they use FedEx so you get it in 2-3 days
15:32:30 [davb]
cool.
15:33:00 [Spork]
I've gotten a cd burner and some digital cam memory from them
15:33:18 [Spork]
krex is good too...I got memory from them

i have had good experiences with outpost.com, but they are going out of business and i believe that frys is buying their assets
15:36:34 [talli]
if customer service is what you seek, run when you hear the name Frys
15:37:12 [talli]
it's almost laughable how bad they are. but the cool thing is that there are so many hardcore geeks at the store that someone will help you - they just won't be paid for doing it
15:41:57 [davb]
thanks guys
15:50:12 [Spork]
heh
15:50:27 [Spork]
egghead.com/onsale.com also got bought out by Fry's
15:51:06 [Spork]
I stick to NewEgg for cheap expensive items and CompUSA for expensive cheap items
15:52:47 [markd2]
markd2 has quit
15:53:42 [talli]
i don't know if eggheda actually got bught
15:53:44 [talli]
you sure?
15:53:56 [talli]
i think they were going to take egghead, but then instead got ready to take outpost
15:54:08 [talli]
however, i did hear that they were going to take both for a nickel of something
15:54:11 [talli]
i wouldn't doubt it
15:54:36 [Spork]
I got an email from the ceo saying we're chapter 11 getting bought by Fry's or another place and if you don't want your info passed on bail out "here"
15:54:55 [Spork]
So I'm not 100% sure but oh well
15:55:04 [Spork]
I have to find a cheap K6-2 500 now
15:55:57 [AaronSw]
* AaronSw reconnects
15:56:46 [talli]
i bought a couple of K6-2 500s for about 500 bucks about a year and a half ago
15:56:52 [talli]
i don't even know if they still sells them
15:56:55 [talli]
sell them
15:57:10 [Spork]
sure do
15:57:15 [Spork]
Krex does
15:57:22 [Spork]
I can get a 500 for 35 from them
15:57:35 [Spork]
or a 550 for same from Econopc
15:57:42 [Spork]
So I don't know whom to buy it from
15:57:49 [Spork]
I trust Krex more since I bought from them before

16:10:17 [ola]
davb: are you done with static-pages or do you have miles to go?
16:11:24 [ola]
(just curious)
16:12:54 [davb]
ola: nope. almost though
16:13:24 [davb]
I have a function that works in psql but not openacs. It doesn't error though.
16:13:41 [davb]
It is supposed to delete records from that static_pages table, but nothing happens.
16:13:48 [davb]
I will look at it later...
16:14:54 [davb]
After that it IS done, except for Oracle testing and hooking into search.
16:17:34 [ola]
cool. so it will make it into beta (first half of November), I take it...
16:19:19 [davb]
yes, i hope so.
16:19:54 [davb]
I plan on using it to index the chump pages for searching.
17:15:07 [ola]
and I plan on using it heavily too. my brother is writing a "world-history book" for our site, so being able to search all that text would be gold.

Hey, you're right, I didn't know about that, looks good (I just took a look)
22:06:22 [Spork]
Hi Don, Dave
22:06:32 [donb]
Who's "Spork"?
22:06:35 [Spork]
lol
22:06:40 [Spork]
You ask that every time you come here
22:06:49 [Spork]
Spork is a utensil developed by Taco Bell
22:07:02 [Spork]
Or a developer with OpenACS4.0
22:07:07 [Spork]
We can't figure it out yet
22:07:16 [donb]
I do? I don't come often ... ahh, a spork can do anything so that means I can assign you everything?
22:07:23 [Spork]
no
22:07:27 [donb]
damn
22:07:29 [Spork]
My boss already got that part
22:07:43 [Spork]
I'm the designer, junior developer, senior developer, dba and everything else you can name
22:07:49 [donb]
Roberto - any luck with the docs?
22:09:35 [donb]
I guess I chased him away ...
22:09:36 [davb]
Ok dumb question of the day. I have a delete statement in a pl/pgsql function static_page__delete that deletes the entry in the static_pages table. When the function is run from OpenACS the row is never deleted and I don't get an error message. If I call static_page__delete(static_page_id) with the exact same id from psql it works. Any ideas?
22:09:38 [davb]
heh
22:09:51 [rbm]
donb: Trying things with them right now
22:10:15 [donb]
Cool - I'm looking forward to playing with jade...
22:11:01 [Spork]
Still at it dave?
22:11:02 [donb]
Dave - two possibilities. The row's not visible in the current transaction (not likely) or something is causing the transaction to rollback, but that should trigger an error.
22:12:09 [donb]
You can use the "raise" statement in your static_page__delete proc and do a "getdiagnostics" to get the number of rows the delete thinks it deleted to get a handle on whether or not the delete's not seeing the row or is getting rolled back afterwards.
22:12:28 [donb]
(I'm not sure of the "getdiagnostics" syntax or even the exact keyword off the top of my head, though)
22:12:43 [davb]
great! thanks. I'll find it now that I know what to look for,
22:13:00 [donb]
"raise" is the PL/pgSQL equivalent of "ns_log" ...
22:13:13 [donb]
(though "raise error" really raises and error, too)
22:14:15 [donb]
"an error" sheesh...
22:16:40 [donb]
OK, I just looked at the PL/pgSQL doc ... it's:
22:16:55 [donb]
GET DIAGNOSTICS <integer_variable> = ROW_COUNT;
22:17:05 [donb]
Then you can just do:
22:17:26 [donb]
RAISE NOTICE "Number of rows deleted: %", <integer_variable>
22:17:30 [donb]
Slick, huh?
22:17:57 [davb]
great.
