You didn't miss anything.
00:52:06 [davb]
at least in this one.
00:53:23 [davb]
these lectures are in RealMedia format. is there any player besides realplayer?
00:54:17 [davb]
aha. a debian package
00:56:36 [rbm]
The debian package is just to help you install it. You still need to download the binary from real.com
00:56:55 [rbm]
The package will setup paths and put the binaries/libs in the right places.

01:17:53 [Spork]
I must have broken something while I was driving home

ack segmentation fault in realplayer
01:27:39 [Spork]
heh
01:27:59 [Spork]
Dave, it doesn't matter if you have an odd number of { in a comment, right?
01:28:40 [davb]
yeah the CD works
01:28:43 [davb]
no idea. it might.

this code is broken somehow
01:31:20 [davb]
Wow, realplayer works very well in linux.

01:51:10 [Spork]
Odd
01:51:28 [Spork]
maybe I got moved to the St. James UBR...I fixed my script but it's not finding my modem
01:51:33 [Spork]
Saying it's offline
01:51:39 [Spork]
But I sure as hell hope I am not offline
01:51:54 [davb]
rbm: yes, but I ran it again and it worked fine, a couple of times.
01:52:32 [davb]
heh. if you modem is offline, it can't check to see if its online...

* rbm is lagging
02:01:55 [davb]
you guys think I should learn my math if I eventually want to learn CS?
02:02:12 [Spork]
Define math
02:02:29 [Spork]
I can tell you exactly what I learned in 3.5 years
02:02:40 [davb]
calculus, linear algebra, etc...
02:02:54 [rbm]
Math is g00d
02:03:09 [rbm]
It helps a lot in developing logical thinking.
02:03:16 [Spork]
yes math is good
02:03:17 [davb]
I was afraid you'd say that. I have to relearn all this crap.
02:03:21 [Spork]
but also depends on what kind of math
02:03:39 [rbm]
Yeah. Usually math from math depts suck. The engineering depts have much better math teachers :)
02:03:48 [davb]
Well I want to get back up to calculus. I am starting at algebra.
02:04:10 [davb]
Actually I learned NO math from math teachers except my college calculus profressor. But that was 10 years ago or so.
02:04:11 [Spork]
if you're doing graphics...definetly learn linear algebra
02:04:16 [rbm]
Discreet Math is good too.
02:04:23 [Spork]
yes
02:04:32 [Spork]
I'll be honest with you
02:04:50 [davb]
Basically I want to be able to understand what David McCusker is saying...http://www.treedragon.com and I think the math will help me with the rest of it.
02:04:52 [Spork]
I took, Linear Algebra, Logic, Calc 1,2,3, Discrete Math 1,2
02:05:09 [rbm]
I took pretty much the same as Spork
02:05:17 [Spork]
Out of those
02:05:21 [Spork]
LA - graphics
02:05:41 [Spork]
Discrete Math - general programming concepts like Finite State Automata, Turing machines and all the other fun stuff
02:05:46 [Spork]
set theory, number theory
02:05:53 [davb]
that I need.
02:05:56 [Spork]
I took Applied Algebra, Probability Theory
02:06:17 [Spork]
Analysis of Algorithms
02:06:27 [Spork]
Logic was too deep for me
02:06:51 [Spork]
I got an A- but that was for my stunning looks...lol...nah, I just wrote a good paper at the end and there was only like 12 kids taking it
02:07:06 [Spork]
can't really fail 10% of your class
02:07:09 [rbm]
* rbm sporks Spork
02:07:13 [Spork]
ouch!
02:07:15 [davb]
well looks like I'll need it then if I want to really understand this stuff.
02:07:55 [davb]
I wish I had decided 10 years ago to be a programmer. I said for the longest time, nah I don't want to be a programmer... oops
02:08:09 [Spork]
heh
02:08:14 [Spork]
I'm the other way
02:09:04 [davb]
I had been surrounded by computers for almost my whole life. I guess I wanted to try something else.

should I need to be root to do cdrecording?
02:18:40 [rbm]
davb: yes
02:19:09 [davb]
ok, just seems unecessary coming from a windows background.
02:24:14 [Spork]
heh
02:24:21 [Spork]
It's possible to burn without being root
02:27:02 [rbm]
If you make a bunch of stuff suid
02:27:08 [rbm]
Which I don't like.
02:27:15 [Spork]
no
02:27:20 [rbm]
No?
02:27:20 [Spork]
If you set it up as root once
02:27:29 [Spork]
xcdroast I think has directions
02:27:36 [rbm]
bah. Don't use xcdroast.
02:27:48 [davb]
aha. I'll check it out. Actually I just like cdrecord. I don't need anything else.
02:28:01 [davb]
of course I am just copying cds
02:29:40 [davb]
this is a million times better than adaptec easy cd creator
02:29:59 [rbm]
anything is better that hard cd creator
02:30:06 [rbm]

02:30:11 [davb]

02:32:43 [davb]
ok spork, any good source of music for linux users?
02:45:11 [Spork]
good source?
02:45:13 [Spork]
What kind of music?
02:45:48 [davb]
modern rock, alternative. I mean like streaming audio internet radio kinda thing.
02:48:41 [davb]
hey cool I found one that works.
02:53:35 [Spork]
oh
02:53:40 [Spork]
I thought you wanted mp3s
02:54:01 [davb]
nah. I could find 'em if I really wanted to.
02:54:03 [davb]
:)
02:54:56 [davb]
Actually I just figured out how to get shoutcast streams into freeamp
02:55:41 [davb]
but thanks if you expended any effort looking!
02:57:48 [Spork]
eh?
02:58:04 [Spork]
No, I was just going to point you at my mp3 web exposed cache
02:58:38 [davb]
I'll have to wait until I get that new harddrive...

nice! I'm watching soccer when I should really be cleaning the apartment...my family are coming over tomorrow...

15:56:53 [abbaJ]
ola: I just got satellite and I'm loving it, for the first time in my life I can watch soccer
16:12:49 [ola]
well, it was a match from the scottish league. Celtic beat Dundee United, 5 goals to 1.
16:14:03 [Spork]

beer all around
16:14:15 [Spork]
cookies?

* Spork steals some cookies from Dave while he's not looking to keep Mark helping
16:14:55 [abbaJ]
ola: what channel did you watch that on? Fox world sports?
16:15:32 [ola]
abbaJ: no. swedish TV4.
16:15:38 [abbaJ]
ahh
16:15:55 [Spork]
I have to clean my room
16:16:04 [abbaJ]
there's a channel I have, that has games from tons of leagues
16:16:13 [abbaJ]
I watched the celtics play the other day
16:16:21 [Spork]
* Spork gets very pointy and starts jumping up and down like a pogo stick getting lots of things on his 'orks
16:18:10 [ola]
abbaJ: did you notice Henke Larsson? he's one of celtics best players and also from sweden...
16:18:29 [abbaJ]
ola: I didn't, but I'll watch for him next time they're on
16:18:35 [ola]
heh
16:18:51 [abbaJ]
to tell you the truth
16:19:01 [abbaJ]
I don't notice almost any players
16:19:13 [abbaJ]
b/c usually it's the first time i've seen the teams who are playing
16:23:18 [ola]
I see. Henke once looked like Bob Marley but he cut his hair, so the only similarity left between the two is the quality of their performance;-)

yes, if you mount them under individual subsites.

s/individual/separate
16:41:08 [graszew]

16:57:55 [ola]
What is .LRN? is it a few modified/brand new OACS4 modules, a bussword invented to hype OACS4 + PG/Oracle or what is it??
16:58:16 [ola]
..and does anyone know which modules are involved? portals, unified bboard(?)...what else?
16:59:48 [davb]
Its a rebuild of ACES using OpenACS. I am not sure what modules are involved though. Probably most of them along with some new ones.

so we will basically have two toolkits to choose from?
17:04:33 [abbaJ]

17:06:44 [davb]
Not exactly. DotLRN is an application of OpenACS. It is a pre-customized system. Preselected pacakges that do something useful out of the box.
17:07:04 [davb]
Hopefully people will develop other prepackaged applications.
17:08:45 [Spork]

Hey, folks, you are around - I switched desktops for a moment there...
18:09:22 [donb]
People working or are people playing? (I'm playing)
18:09:50 [davb]
I am fooling around with WiKit as a desktop app.
18:10:59 [donb]
What's WiKit?
18:12:23 [davb]
Its the Wiki application implemented in Tcl using MetaKit for storage. The Tclers Wiki runs on it.
18:13:09 [donb]
Oh, I see.
18:14:19 [donb]
Actually I've gotta run, just thought I'd check in to see if there was anything interesting going on. aD dirt ... INS horror stories ... that kind of thing.
18:14:27 [donb]
See y'all later!

20:26:14 [davb]
with OpenACS?
20:26:22 [davb]

20:34:10 [idware]

20:34:35 [davb]
You should get the Welcome, please click here to install the datamodel screen.
20:34:57 [davb]
I am not sure if anything else can get served until you do that.
20:34:58 [idware]
can not get any pages and the only errors refer to the database being empty etc.
20:35:19 [davb]
hmmm. hang on...
20:35:32 [idware]
it has listening on 192.168.0.3:80 etc
20:36:22 [davb]
What is the exact database error message?
20:37:02 [davb]
although even if the postgres driver doesn't load, you should get a page saying so.
20:37:03 [idware]
this is the first onew
20:37:07 [idware]

idware_: duh. I expected you were running OpenACS 4. OK I need to realign my brain a minute...
21:23:20 [davb]
idware, you need to read the OpenACS install docs. You need to load the datamodel yourself.
21:23:28 [davb]
OpenACS 4 installs in from the web page.
21:24:14 [idware_]
easier just to intall v4?
21:24:18 [idware_]
install
21:25:08 [davb]
easier, no, just different.

B: http://openacs.org/doc/openacs/install/x138.html from davb
21:25:25 [davb]
check out that page under Installing the datamodel
21:25:35 [idware_]
ok thanks
21:25:46 [davb]
3.2.5 is well tested code. 4 is alpha.
21:26:34 [davb]
3.2.5 is easier to learn to hack on. 4 is a better platform but the learning curve is much steeper.
21:27:17 [davb]
I wonder if theres a way to have the openacs 3 check for the datamodel and log an error if its not installed.
