moo!
02:11:11 [davb]
I went geocaching for the first time yesterday. It was lots of fun.

02:12:34 [davb]
Basically some nut puts a plastic bucket full of junk somewhere in the forest or wherever, then posts the coordinates on the web.
02:12:43 [davb]
Other loonies go looking for it.
02:12:48 [vinod]
cool!
02:12:54 [vinod]
what'd you find?
02:13:22 [davb]
There is a floppy disc of airplane photos, but my floppy is apparently non-functional right now.
02:13:35 [davb]
Oh yeah, you have to leave something, so we left an extra CD we had.
02:13:54 [davb]
Then you enter in the logbook. There is an online logbook too.
02:14:53 [davb]
This is the one we went to : http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.asp?ID=3221
02:16:53 [vinod]
wow, the kids must have enjoyed that. like an easter egg hunt on steroids ;-)
02:18:40 [davb]
Right.
02:19:56 [davb]
I also fixed static-pages for oracle.
02:20:20 [vinod]
cool - did you do that while geocaching, too? :-)
02:21:44 [davb]
Nope, laptop is busted.
02:22:21 [vinod]
it's probably best to keep work and pleasure separated, too
02:23:04 [davb]
yeah. I have been slacking off on OpenACS work for about 2 weeks. I fixed all the oracle bugs in about an hour.
02:23:43 [vinod]
nice! i swear i'm always more productive after spending a little time away
02:24:11 [vinod]
but i tend to be too stubborn, so i just keep pluggin away and getting nowhere :-)
02:24:18 [davb]
Me too.
02:24:51 [davb]
I am going to rebuild my site on OpenACS 4 soon. I started fooling with Edit This Page this weekend.
02:26:06 [vinod]
cool. etp looks great - are you gonna set up your weblog through that?
02:27:19 [davb]
Yes. I am kinda waiting to see if they come up with one so I don't have to. Talli mentioned that they were thinking about putting that type of feature in.
02:27:36 [davb]
But it is really simple to setup a new page/content type in ETP.
02:28:07 [davb]
Hey, are you familiar with the OpenACS 3.x categorization feature? And does OpenACS 4 have anything like it?
02:28:07 [vinod]
i only played around. haven't had a chance to look at the internals
02:28:26 [davb]
I looked at all the code quickly. It seems well planned.
02:29:40 [vinod]
not too familiar with it... and don't know of the openacs4 analog offhand, sorry
02:29:59 [davb]
Darn. To the bboard!
02:31:10 [davb]
hmmmmm....I can't seem to find the CVS online.... it just goes to a tarball...
02:33:37 [vinod]
huh, you're right. that's weird
02:35:26 [davb]
Argh. I tried to release ns_xmlrpc again, but I still get an error.
02:36:11 [davb]
I thought I'd try again because Don was able to create an OpenACS release.
02:40:01 [vinod]
what error does it give you?
02:41:15 [davb]
database dml failed or something like that.
02:41:30 [davb]
sorry, I closed the browser.
02:41:36 [vinod]
ahh... one of those very detailed errors :-)
02:41:41 [vinod]
that's ok, just wondering
02:41:43 [davb]
I filled in all the fields on the form.
02:41:45 [davb]
np
02:41:59 [davb]
Obviously OpenACS ate the real error message.
02:42:32 [davb]
ARGH! I am in windows and can;t look at my Linux partition to examine the source... (openacs 4)
02:44:00 [davb]
* davb wonders if its in the CR...(categories)
02:44:37 [vinod]
there definitely are categories in the CR, but i'm not sure how they're used
02:45:40 [davb]
Spiffy. That's it. Now to figure out how to get it into ETP
02:46:02 [davb]
basically there are "keywords" which are themselves content_items.
02:46:15 [vinod]
i think they're called keywords
02:46:32 [davb]
And there is a big map table. That is just like 3
02:47:05 [davb]
It should be easy to hack in support for categories into ETP.
02:49:22 [davb]
I also want to hack in a developer or designer interface. So the templates can be changed or edited from the web UI. They probably figured content writers would not be hacking templates.
02:50:31 [davb]
back to categories... of course, a keyword can be a child of another keyword. So you can group them. Very powerful.
02:50:56 [vinod]
yeah, i agree that it would be nice to edit templates via the web
02:51:08 [davb]
next version....
02:51:33 [davb]
I have alot of plans. Hopefully I can get someone to pay me to implement some of them.
02:52:15 [vinod]
yeah, let me know if you find someone to do that. i gotta few proposals for them
02:52:21 [vinod]
:-)
02:52:22 [davb]
np
02:52:56 [davb]
The real fun will be building applications with OpenACS. Put a few packages together, whip up a nice web admin for them and puree.
02:53:43 [davb]
The only thing it really lacks is a coherent interface to manage a site.
02:54:08 [davb]
Of course, 3.x wasn't really much better.
02:54:23 [davb]
aD saved all the fancy stuff for the paying customers.
02:54:26 [davb]
(i hope)
02:56:08 [davb]
I was just thinking, ETP really is a killer app. It gets rid of a bunch of other modules like NEWS, FAQ, PRESS, CMS (obviously)
02:56:34 [davb]
You could get away with bboard, etp and general-comments.
02:57:06 [vinod]
that's true. i think it proves the power of the CMS datamodel, if implemented with a simpler UI
02:57:52 [davb]
Exactly. You can add layers on top of it, if you really want.
02:58:11 [vinod]
exactly. start simple and grow (if necessary)
02:59:05 [davb]
Well, basically, aD knew their customers (or potenial customers). They demanded every feature in any product that claimed to be a CMS. Its how the big places spec out the jobs. So aD threw in everything.
02:59:36 [davb]
If someone has an OpenACS project that needs that stuff, they can afford to build it.
03:00:43 [davb]
Thanks for listening, as always! It really helps to just ramble on to someone to get the brain going.
03:01:04 [vinod]
haha - i guarantee that i learn more from these than you do
03:01:33 [davb]
Sure, right. I learned alot helping that Psychplex guy.
03:02:07 [davb]
Doesn't matter anyway. I haven't figured out how to get these results just talking to myself yet :)
03:02:34 [vinod]
haha - well, when you do, let me know. i know a couple good psychiatrists
03:07:41 [davb]
Cool. I'll be going now. Goodnight
03:07:59 [vinod]
gnight!

03:36:08 [talli]

03:38:47 [vinod]
wonderful. and then are you off to sf for the openacs social?
03:38:56 [talli]
ya, hosting that
03:39:47 [vinod]
cool - prolly won't be as fun as the ones you hosted out here.
03:39:57 [vinod]
since i won't be able to make it
03:40:24 [AaronSw]
You guys need to schedule these for when I'm in Boston. Sheesh
03:40:46 [vinod]
hey. if you have one in chi-town, i'll try to make the trip
03:41:09 [AaronSw]
hmz. not too many openacsers around here
03:41:35 [vinod]
bummer. maybe you need to move out here ;-)
03:41:55 [AaronSw]
heh, i'm working on it
03:45:13 [vinod]
cool. haven't seen any schoolyard subversion updates. what's new?
03:46:30 [AaronSw]
yeah, i need to update it soon
03:46:30 [AaronSw]
I'm taking two classes at lfc.edu
03:46:47 [AaronSw]
i've got two schoolyard subv updates in the pipe
03:47:00 [vinod]
cool - what classes?
03:47:22 [AaronSw]
Abstract and Discrete Math; Fundamentals of Music
03:47:52 [vinod]
wow. very interesting! i was a big math geek in my day
03:48:27 [vinod]
tried to be a musician, but my right brain is a little underdeveloped

05:08:41 [talli]

05:08:47 [talli]
right. magic
05:09:21 [vinod]
i'm writing this stuff down. next time i hit the bars, my first line's gonna be "hey, you a chick?"
05:09:34 [talli]
it works, man.
05:09:42 [vinod]
lol
05:10:03 [talli]
also, try "that makeup you wearin'?"
05:10:48 [vinod]
* vinod is furiously scribblin notes
05:14:42 [talli]
vinod, what kind of musician were you aimin' to be?
05:14:56 [vinod]
i played violin for like ten years
05:15:23 [talli]
classical?
05:15:28 [vinod]
i was ok technically, but i never could get to the next level
05:15:30 [vinod]
yup
05:15:45 [talli]
the next level is very very hard in music
05:15:57 [talli]
i am totally tone deaf, but dream of being a musician
05:16:07 [talli]
i'm listening to coltrane's a few of my favorite things right now
05:16:13 [vinod]
yeah - me too
05:16:14 [talli]
i wish i could play a brass.
05:16:19 [vinod]
coltrane is awesome
05:16:42 [vinod]
markd plays brass
05:16:52 [talli]
oh yeah? what kind?
05:17:01 [talli]
coltrane is a god
05:17:03 [vinod]
i forget. i think he's pretty versatile
05:17:44 [vinod]
my first exposure to coltrane was when i moved to boston 5 yrs ago. there was a coltrane memorial concert and it just blew me away
05:17:56 [talli]
who played?
05:18:39 [vinod]
a bunch of no-name boston-area musicians, but they were pretty good. they impressed my friend enough that she hired them for her wedding.
05:18:45 [vinod]
that was a great wedding :-)
05:19:01 [vinod]
it was at boston university
05:19:24 [vinod]
i think they still do it yearly around his birthday, but i haven't made it the past few years
05:19:39 [talli]
cool
05:20:09 [talli]
i bought my parents a bunch of jazz cd's.

05:20:22 [talli]
i think that i actually just got them to buy me a bunch of cd's
05:20:50 [vinod]
haha - that's convenient
05:20:52 [talli]
i really meant to buy them stuff they would like, but it ended up being a lot of hooting and snorting. i love the shit, but they want something they can eat diner too
05:20:54 [talli]
ya
05:22:20 [talli]
i'm not familiar with any of the musicians there, but i'm sure they are good and accomplished
05:22:44 [talli]
many of the top jazz musicians in NYC studied at berklee, so there are some outstanding musicians in boston
05:22:48 [vinod]
yeah, i had never heard of any of them, but they play with a lot of passion
05:23:15 [vinod]
i used to live a block away from the berklee and i think i went to one concert while i was there
05:23:40 [vinod]
now, i really miss it since i'm way out in dorchester now

16:12:59 [davb]
the bboard module implements it's own category system on top of the CR instead of using the CR's built in system!!!!
16:13:06 [davb]
Why??
16:13:32 [davb]
Didn't the developers look at the documentation or code??
16:14:10 [davb]
Only the CMS uses the CR category functions. I wonder how many other modules do it on their own.
16:15:35 [davb]
And of course, there is another map table just for bboard messages.
16:16:20 [davb]
And yes, ecommerce has it's own category system and map table.
16:16:50 [davb]
I am not sure that is not an ecommerce 3 port though...

16:22:09 [davb]
Well, I wanted to have categories in ETP, but as every other package rolled their own. I can easily setup a category attribute right inside ETP and forget about the CR categories.

17:45:42 [Psychephylax]
And he's not here for me to bug him about this
17:46:02 [Psychephylax]

It's FreeBSD 4.4-RC2
17:50:48 [Psychephylax]
my bad...RC1
17:51:18 [rbm]
Oh. No idea about *BSD stuff.
17:51:22 [Psychephylax]
heh
17:51:30 [Psychephylax]
it's not really BSD stuff, more like X stuff
17:51:44 [Psychephylax]
It craps out with this:
17:51:48 [rbm]
I could send you my startx script if you want. You'd probably need to change the paths
17:52:13 [rbm]
4.1 didn't change in regards to "startx". it's just a script that does some housekeeping and then starts the "X" binary.

17:58:03 [rbm]
Do you want my XF86Config-4 to base yours? You'll need to change paths, driver, and monitor info. But that shouldn't be hard.
17:58:18 [Psychephylax]
now lets see if I can do it as a regular user
17:58:57 [Psychephylax]
* Psychephylax needs to fine tune his config file now
18:05:42 [Psychephylax]
ok
18:05:46 [Psychephylax]
I got it but it's got 2 problems
18:05:50 [rbm]
* rbm heads to class
18:05:51 [Psychephylax]
1. resolution is too high
18:05:53 [rbm]
(yet another one)
18:06:04 [Psychephylax]
2. it's only 8 bits instead of 16
18:06:17 [davb]
poor rbm...
18:06:21 [davb]
FIx it!
18:06:38 [davb]
Put the resolution/bitdepth you prefer highest up, first on the line or something like that.
18:06:50 [Psychephylax]
heh

22:09:38 [talli]
has anyone considered using PyWX to develop openacs systems with Python?
22:13:19 [rbm]
I have. But I haven't tested.
22:13:27 [rbm]
I wanted to use some Python modules.

* AaronSw is developing OpenACS systems (sorta) with Python, but moving away from OpenACS
22:29:09 [talli]
but you're not using aolserver
22:31:21 [AaronSw]
Yes I am!
22:31:28 [AaronSw]
And PyWX too.
22:31:37 [talli]
oh, cool.
22:31:41 [talli]
how do you like it?
22:32:29 [AaronSw]
I like it a lot, actually. While we need to port a lot of the standard Tcl library to Python, I think it's a really nice environment (once you get everything running).
22:35:02 [talli]
how do you think python apps would interact with openacs apps?
22:36:16 [AaronSw]
Umm, just fine. PyWX lets you mix Tcl and Python code freely, and you really just need to communicate thru the DB anyway.
22:36:27 [talli]
wow, very cool
22:36:42 [talli]
we had a client who really wanted to use openacs, but wanted to use python too.
22:36:53 [talli]
i wish we had thought of making the pywx pitch sooner..
22:37:18 [AaronSw]
I think Python can even call Tcl procs and vice versa, but not positive on that
22:43:22 [talli]
where can i learn more about the libraries available in python (i mean, if there's a place that is better or complementary to python.org)?
22:46:50 [talli]
anyway, i'll talk to you more about this later aaron
22:46:58 [AaronSw]
ok
22:46:58 [talli]
btw, how is calliope treating you? any probs?
22:47:04 [AaronSw]
nope, not yet
22:47:09 [AaronSw]
well actually -- there is one
22:47:21 [AaronSw]
the version of RPM on their is rather old, and can't read RPM version 3 files
22:47:44 [AaronSw]
I tried to upgrade it but I ran into libc incompatibilites, which i don't want to mess with
22:48:00 [AaronSw]
I was trying to install the PyXML stuff, but wasn't able to.
22:48:22 [AaronSw]
So, not sure if you can do anything about it, but I thought I'd mention it.
22:48:51 [talli]
hmm.. what do you need to fix it?
22:49:06 [talli]
i mean, do whatever you gotta do.
22:49:24 [AaronSw]
Well, I guess I'd need to update libc, but I'm wary since every time I do that things blow up.

i don't think we're using calli for anything important right now, so there wouldn't be anything musea critical that you would blow up
22:51:47 [AaronSw]
I'm just worried that I'd have to get one of you to reboot and fsck the machine and all that.
